Joe Adventure Team Set not Completely Wack

Something can be (kinda) cool while still being something I’d never buy (yet completely in my niche of interest). I should get a couple of facts out there to clarify my stance thoughts. First, I’d never buy any G.I. Joe related figure that isn’t ARAH and O-ring. Second, it’s not a platform, – even if (seems to be to some in the Joe collecting/enthusiast community – I don’t visit boards or make posts about the lack of relevance of the newer molds because of the very fact that I don’t care about said molds. If I don’t have time to enjoy them, I certainly don’t have the time to belittle them or the people who enjoy them.
So, what’s Cool?
I just posted the card art for this set over at BSCkids and they are actually kind of cool themselves (I wasn’t really feeling the the art we saw with the figures associated with the Rise of Cobra movie). So I don’t have to get into what the set is, here is the bit from the Club itself:
all utilizing 25th Anniversary sculpts! Each figure comes packaged with a special accessory (vehicle, etc.) inside an “AT Mission Crate” package. Once you open the “AT Mission Crate”, you’ll find each figure on its own individual blister card. The first three sets are: AT Air Adventurer & Helicopter; AT Land Adventurer & 6-wheel ATV; Dr. “Venom” & AT Commander with giant man-eating plant.
Love EVERYTHING but that first bit, much like my aversion to the 25th or Modern Era style, I also don’t buy the pre-ARAH (or post for that matter!) dolls.
Three things stand out.
- I read that the heads of these figures would be based off of the old school, O.G., Adventure Team Set set from the 60’s and 70’s. I don’t like dolls, but that would be kind of awesome if it was true.
- Dr. Venom is a character high on many a “wish list” over the years.
- Joe Colton
True heads know, but #3 is especially awesome. Joe Colton is G.I. Joe. He is the guy that was mandated by JFK to create an elite military unit, and he is a figure from the ’60s Adventure Team Set. We’ve had Colton figures before (in 1994, and a hideous one in 2006), but not one from when he was in prime kicking butt (which is what I’m assuming these will be).
If I was ever going to buy outside of my O-ring focus, it would be this set. It would be so because it could be an autonomous line, one that I could trick myself into believing is not G.I. Joe, but rather its on entity (though in many ways it’s in fact Joe to the core). I’d love to review these figures…man do I wish they were o-rings though!
This may be a perfect set to bridge fans of the various sculpts. I’m not sure how well it will go over, but conceptually the idea is very sound and one that should be lauded, because the Club sometimes take a lot of shit (and I’m not completely innocent, as secretly I wish everything s as o-ring!) being pulled from a variety of directions. Bottom line?
This set is a winner whether I purchase it or not.
