G.I. JOE – First Marvel Original Art!

G.I. Joe#1 page 1 Original art

This month’s Comiclink focused auction ended (a busy month for comic auctions in general with Heritage, Comics Connect, and Quality Comix also in play this November) a couple of days ago and while the field probably wasn’t as top heavy as some of their previous auctions, I found that it was particularly strong in offerings from some of my own collecting focuses. I have to admit that I ended up striking out on all of my hopefuls, but I still loved just seeing the headlining (for me) item–the original art for the first page of the first issue of Marvel Comics’ G.I. Joe run.

Herbe Trimpe is certainly not an unknown name to comic fans (I don’t have to mention the now iconic cover to Hulk#181, the first appearance of Hugh Jackman Wolverine do I?) but the real draw here is simply being the print introduction of A Real American Hero (I’m in the process of a reread/review of the Marvel run over at BSC if interested). Truth be told, as a child I actually started reading JOE a bit after this debut, but the page simply rings true to the spirit of the first seventy or so issues that (still) represent some of my favorite reading in this or any other medium.

The winning bid of over $7k was pretty damn healthy. While I’m disappointed in not winning, I find my post-auction loss reaction to be more mild than the norm, as G.I. JOE is just one of those properties hobbies or focuses that even in what tends to be a (understandably so considering that every item is unique) rather selfish hobby (art), doesn’t come with any negative stigma for me. It all goes back to toy store, family and Christmas memories for me.

I have pages 16 and 19 from G.I. Joe #1 featuring Snake Eyes and Scarlett. I was thinking about putting them up on Heritage. Does anybody have an estimate of their value? Thanks.

It's so volatile, buy if you wanted to gauge I'd put them up at Comiclink (which is free) at a price you'd be happy to part with and field offers. Or you could just throw them up on CAF) I'm sure you'd get offers. Heritage definitely gets dollars, but with buyers and seller premiums in place for so few (relatively low dollar for them) there are much better ways to fish IMHO.

If you ever put them up somewhere, let me know!

Thannks for the info. I'll let you know when I get them up somewhere.
